Dr Abbas Khan “Unlawfully Killed” In Syrian Jail

The inquest being held at the Royal Courts of Justice into the death of British doctor Abbas Khan, has returned a verdict of unlawful killing. The Khan family has been represented by Michael Mansfield QC and Andrew Jefferies QC of Mansfield Chambers, instructed and assisted by Irene Nembhard of Birnberg Peirce.

During the two week hearing, in which politicians, Foreign and Commonwealth representatives and a Syrian national who had spent time detained with Dr Khan in Damascus, gave evidence.

Despite the Syrian authorities assertions that Dr Khan had committed suicide by hanging, the jury concluded that they were sure that "Dr Khan was deliberately and intentionally killed without any legal justification."

Asked what the Jury's conclusion was as to the death of Dr Khan she replied "Unlawful killing."

The Khan family's barrister, Michael Mansfield QC said it was an important case which laid down a marker and should now go forward to the International Criminal Court.

"What this Jury has done is uncover the truth, that is was never suicide." Said Mr Mansfield QC.
