Mansfield Chambers' Record on Inquests & Inquiries

The Mansfield Inquest and Inquiry team comprises experienced, caring and committed practitioners who are dedicated to providing sound advice throughout investigations and excellent advocacy at hearings.

Members of our team have appeared in controversial and complex matters and cases involving numerous parties. Recent inquests handled by our team include the inquest into the death of Mark Duggan and the Hillsborough inquests.

We have a particular focus on cases in which the Article 2 investigatory obligation applies. For example

  • Suspicious and self-inflicted deaths which occur in prison, police custody, or immigration detention,
  • Deaths of patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Where a person has died after contact with the police, army or security services.

The Mansfield team is also experienced in investigations into deaths of vulnerable people where the involvement of health and/or social services has been relevant. We aim to force accountability through rigorous examination of issues such as violence, bullying, neglect and systemic failures of care for the vulnerable. We have experience in cases where issues of clinical neglect arise, suspicious deaths, military deaths and deaths abroad. We are also able to represent people in Inquests involving breach of health and safety law.

Members of the team are regularly instructed in Judicial Review and Human Rights cases and have experience of Police, Prison, Mental Health, Community Care and Immigration law

We support the work of INQUEST (www.inquest.org.uk) and many of us are members of the Inquest Lawyers Group.
