Mark Duggan “Lawful Killing” Verdict Upheld

Michael Mansfield QC represented the family of Mark Duggan during the recent High Court case wherein the original verdict of "Lawful Killing" has been upheld.

The case revolved around the killing of Mark Duggan in August 2011 when he was shot by armed police officers, despite being unarmed himself. The killing sparked a number of riots around the country.

The 3 Judges sitting in the High Court, Sir Brian Leveson, president of the Queen's Bench Division, Mr Justice Burnett and Judge Peter Thornton QC dismissed the application for Judicial Review on the findings that although the loss of Mark Duggan's life had been a tragedy, none of the grounds raised for the challenge of the original inquest were made out.

Mark Duggan's mother, Pamela Duggan is now launching an appeal against this latest decision. Her solicitor, Marica Wallis Stewart stated:

"She remains deeply distressed about the death of her son and the circumstances in which it occurred and has instructed the legal team to lodge an appeal."

The Metropolitan Police released a statement following the ruling stating:

"We are not complacent; our primary aim is keeping Londoners safe, and we recognise the considerable and devastating impact of gun crime on those affected by it."

"We will continue to learn and develop our methods for firearms operations to keep Londoners safe."
